Indiana women defeat Minnesota, 4-3 |
The No. 38 Indiana women's tennis team earned a
hard-fought 4-3 victory over No. 51 Minnesota on Sunday, March 25 in Minneapolis.
Despite an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles by Laura McGaffigan and Alba Berdala, the
Hoosiers dropped the doubles point to Minnesota.
Indiana (13-3) would bounce back in singles action, taking a 2-1 lead in the match with
wins at No. 2 and No. 6 singles. McGaffigan defeated Danielle Mousseau, 6-4, 6-0 at No.
2, while Stephanie Heller earned a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 6.
Minnesota earned tough wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles to go up 3-2 in the match, but
Berdala at No. 1 and Lindsey Stuckey at No. 5 gave Indiana the victory, each winning in
three sets. Berdala defeated Ashley Schellhas, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4, and Stuckey earned her 20th
victory of the season, downing Ida Malmberg, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, at No. 5.
Sigrid Fischer, who plays at No. 3 singles and teams with Cecile Perton at No. 2 doubles,
was out of the lineup with illness, forcing Indiana to make several changes in its lineup.
"The girls played a great match," head coach Lin Loring said. "We're a good team with
everyone in the lineup, and we're average when we have people missing. When our lower
singles players all went up, it made it even. It was an exciting college match. Lindsey
Stuckey did a great job, she was facing a senior in the third set. Alba also did a great job
for us. We have also had a number of problems with travel this weekend. Under the
circumstances, it was a very good win for us. It's our goal to get healthy to play Michigan
State next week."
The Hoosiers return to action on Sunday, April 1, at Michigan State.
